Hello all. I’m a college student from the United States. I’m interested in learning about Ghanaian culture.
Specifically, I’m a folklorist who wants to trace the evolution of Anansi Sem (Kweku Ananse/Bra Nansi/Aunt Nancy/etc. depending on where you’re from) over the generations. I’ve researched Ashanti folktales and proverbs, but most of the research I’ve seen is around a hundred years old. I would like to expand my understanding of how current generations transmit and receive Anansi tales in a modern setting.
If you’re interested in teaching me, please tell:
1. Your favorite Anansi Sem,
2. Explain what that story teaches,
3. Where and who you learned the story from,
4. How you value these types of traditional stories today, and
5. Why you would or would not pass these stories onto your children and grandchildren.
Thanks so much for your time. I look forward to getting to know you on the forums.
